On April 29, 2019, China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) hosted and successfully concluded the 16th CUPL "Jingtian & Gongcheng Cup" Quasi-Lawyer Competition. The annual event was organized by the CUPL Prelawyer Association and has taken place 16 times since its inception in 2004.
This year, the event still targets undergraduates who are studying law in their sophomore year or later, undergraduates with a dual degree in law, and master degree students of law in Beijing and Tianjin. The winner is selected based on their results from a series of assessments, which include a written test, an interview, as well as other assessments such as a case analysis and performance in a moot court. As a strategic partner for this event, Jingtian & Gongcheng provided its full support toward the organization of this event.
Beijing Partners Xie Ruoting from the firm’s Litigation & Arbitration practice and Lin Yanbin, a Partner from the Capital Markets practice, served as judges for the interview session. The final jury comprised Partners Liu Yue and Dong Chungang from the firm’s Litigation & Arbitration practice, as well as Ge Pingliang, a professor from China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL).
Following two consecutive rounds of elimination, eight contestants advanced to the final based on their technical legal skills, including legal analysis and debate. Ultimately, Wang Haohao, a graduate student admitted by the University of International Business and Economics in 2018, Chen Rongbin, an undergraduate admitted by CUPL in 2015 and Wang Yaoqian, a graduate student admitted by CUPL in 2018, won the top three rankings in respective order. They also won test-free, internship opportunities from Jingtian & Gongcheng.
Over the 16 years, a plethora of legal talent have leveraged this competition to differentiate themselves and used it as a springboard to grow into outstanding lawyers.
