James Ma is a partner of Jingtian & Gongcheng LLP. James’ practice covers banking and finance, structured financings, project financings, restructurings and reorganizations, distressed asset dispositions and acquisitions, leveraged buy-outs, privatization, cross-border investments, as well as investment grade and high yield bond offerings, medium-term-note programs and debt capital market transactions.
With over 20 years of extensive experience, James is widely regarded as one of the leading practitioners in banking and finance, corporate restructurings and debt capital market representing leading investment and commercial banks, private equity funds, public and private companies, and PRC state-owned enterprises across a wide range of sectors including mining, real estate, international trade, retail, manufacturing, logistics and transportation, energy, health care and life sciences, food and beverage, education, advertising, communications, and information technology.
Prior to joining our firm, James was a partner at a US multinational law firm based in Hong Kong and held senior position at a US law firm in New York. He has deep expertise in structuring and negotiating cross-border financing transactions and foreign direct investments into Greater China, acting for multinational corporations and private equity funds, as well as advising Chinese state-owned enterprises and private entities on outbound investments into the greater-China region and other Asian jurisdictions.
James obtained J.D. degree from Cornell Law School (Full Tuition Fellowship) and LL.M. and LL.B. degrees from Peking University Law School (First Class Honors). He is qualified as a solicitor in Hong Kong and admitted to the New York State Bar. He is native in Mandarin and fluent in English.
